Tomb of Annihilation > D&D Encounters S24 S04

Another great night of D&D Encounters at Alakazam comics.

The Nine's are still exploring Chult--this week we finished up the River Encounter and headed into the jungle in pursuit of the Grate Ape. I  ran the Ataaz Muhah encounter from the Tomb of Annihilation.

Getting them from the river into the jungle was a little railroady--but the kids were struggling to stay focused and the role play I had planed with the rest of the caravan did not really pan out--several of the kids just want to kill everything!

We had a large crew this week--Cody, Josh, Josiah, Henry, Coco, Henry, Nick--a seven players table is not the biggest table I have ever DM'd, but when all the kids are under 10 it can get a little unfocused, if you know what I mean (and I know that you do)!

The kids are still really enjoying exploring the comic shop, which is wonderful to see

we did find another die after the game this week!

Actual Play Tomb of Annihilation > D&D Encounters S24 S03

Tomb of Annihilation > D&D Encounters S24 S03

I am running Tomb of Annihilation for 5 kids under 10 years old at Alakazam Comics in Irvine, CA.

My DM kit, which I will update in more detail in a separate post is basically the Adventure Book and a Field Note Brand Journal.

I am also rolling video of the adventure if you are interested--the camera I am using is very very old.

The evening started with the kids having combat with a scorpion mini from Cody's box--they may have been fighting with each other as well. It was nuts.

Once that settled down and we did a recap we took a break for Pizza. Pizza break is more important then most people realize when playing D&D with kids under 10.

After slices, we were back in Chult where the party was ambushed while traveling upriver to find out what is going on at Camp Vengence.

In the photo below please note Cody's tiny character sheets because I had the printer still set to the 4x6 paper size to print the Christmas Card Envelopes--kid did not know how to reset the printer. Also, note my amazing map--the blue is the flowing river & the green lumps are 45-foot jungle trees.

The party was traveling up a river in canoes lead by two Tortles. My Tortle minis from the first Reaper Bones Kickstarter were painted.

A four-armed ape, GIRALLON,  was hurling rocks at the canoes--22 points was enough to sink a canoe.

Crazed Giant Boars were drinking water from the shore--the boys could not help but attack them!

There were two crits, but I did not capture them.

Henry left his Tens on the table & I hope to return it to him next week.

Dragon Talk: Sage Advice - Table Rules, 8/28/17

Cody and I watched this amazing episode on Table Rules.

Jeremy did a great job explaining what Table Rules are, but I would have added a lot more kind of generic "social etiquette" rules--largely because I play a lot of public play & I play with kids. Also, his look to the DMG for House Rules Ideas was excellent.

In any event, here are my House Rules

1. Listen
2. Everyone Gets A Turn
3. Same Team
4. Awesome > Rules

Actual Play Storm King's Thunder--D&D Encounters S23 S34

Storm King's Thunder--D&D Encounters S23 S34

Alakazam Comics D&D Adventure League is going strong--we ran three crowded tables--two Tier One tables with a lot of new players, so returning Grognards, and a DM in Cos Play.

I captured this strange image at some point during the night.

Really not sure what it is at all!

The game picked up where it left off--the Sword Coast Collective raiding Imryth's Desert layer.

The party had flown in Zyphro's Cloud Tower -- he attached the key as protection from the lightning he anticipated coming from the blue dragon

Beneath the amphitheater, there was an ancient sandstone temple buried beneath the sand being used by the dragon as a layer. Within the layer, some Yaun-Ti were performing a dark deranged ritual.

The party let the Giants deal with the dragon and charged the treasure horde where they were attacked by Air Elementals.

Some great die rolling, including this called CRITICAL...on a perception check...

And thus came to a close Storm King Thunder!

D&D in the Park with DM Cody

Cody DM'd his first game of Dungeons & Dragons in the park on Sunday. There were three 9 year old players and two adults. It was a simple caravan guard combat session with the party being attacked by modrons intent on stealing our Ballista.

The interesting thing is that Cody invented a FANTASTIC mechanic. When draing the Caravan wagons on the battlemat he had the other players draw the wagons--they are in Red and Black below:

This really drew the players in & got the kids interested.

I mean honestly it was amazing, I play a lot of D&D With kids and this was the first time I have seen kids this engaged.

The game was wonderful--we had some very fun role play and some good critical hits
