Ixalan Prerelease at Alakazam Comics

Jack & I went to the Alakazam Comic prerelease of Ixilan. They had a Two-Headed Giant sealed tournement which seemed perfect for us; since, we did not know any of the cards at all.

We had watched the Wedge Prerelease Guide on Mana Source YouTube channel:

As well as the Magic the Amatuering demo game:

but we were not very well prepared--I was planning to force Merfolk, cause I love Simic, and Jack was going to wait and see what he got...

He ended up getting like all the removal cards--I switched to dinosaur and the plan was for him to keep us alive until the monsters could attack--not the worst plan we have ever had.

Game one was against some very serious Brian's and Tim's--talk of time on the pro tour and winning Two-Headed Giant at GenCon had us shaking--lots of weird rules interpretations on what opponent meant lead to some confusion on everyone's part--but a solid win for us out of the gate.

Game two was against Hot Garbage who had been playing all night at a midnight prerelease. They had good cards and a solid strategy, but we were able to fairly easily outlast them and simply grind them down.

Game three had just about my favorite moment playing Magic with Jack of all time--we were two and oh going into this game and everyone knew what cards we had (Jack and I had been paying basically no attention at all the entire time). So the game started like it had--Jack had some cheap flyers backed with tap tricks and I was dropping monsters--they were struggling with blocks on Jack and did not agree with the decision the made and started fighting amongst themselves--it is never fun to play against Pouty players, particularly when the players likely were better than us, knew the cards better, and were frustrated--but whatever. They had argued if Jack could have a trick--the trick was tap pay one add plus one plus one--the trick was on the table. The decided he did not have a trick, played into a trick that was on the table--I mean literally it was not even a card in hand trick, and then one of the players gut all fussy.

But that was not the best.

After that, Jack looked at the board, and was like "you want to just race them?" I mean he says this out loud to me, in front of them, while they are still reeling from the last round. They knew that our decks were not Agro, but they also had learned that Jack knew what he was doing.

We raced and won.

3-0 is not a bad place to be.

I found this set very playable and a lot of fun. Alakazam is a great place to play Magic. Fun.

Free RPG Day 2016 -- We B4 Goblins!

This year looks like another banner year for Free RPG Day!

I am likely going to run at Comic Quest again this year. And, once again, Paizo is releasing a Goblin themed adventure--We B4 Goblins.

This one has yet another amazing cover!

The adventure was written by Crystal Frasier--which is awesome, she has been doing a ton of great work lately & I am glad that her design will be seen outside of the Pathfinder Society stuff she seems to focus on.

The blurb has:

All goblins have to start somewhere!
As whelps of the Licktoad tribe just out of their swaddling cages, the goblins Chuffy, Mogmurch, Poog, and Reta must prove themselves by undergoing a series of challenges, from tying a string to a large spider and shouting insults with hot rocks in their mouths to facing off against a goblin bully and his dimwitted minions. As a final test of their mettle, they must make a dangerous (and smelly) trek to claim a toad from the nearby swamp and present it to the terrifying presence that lurks within the Cave of Darkfear, only after which can they truly call themselves goblins!
But as the goblins return to the Licktoad village, they come across a brightly colored, jingling human carrying a map to a small farm up the river where a family of halflings are celebrating a wedding—the perfect setup for a goblin raid! Will the heroes acquit themselves in the finest goblin fashion by wreaking havoc upon the nuptials? Or will they be bitten by ferocious dogs and smashed by frying pans?
We B4 Goblins is an adventure for four goblin characters just beginning their careers of mischief and mayhem, written for the award-winning Pathfinder Roleplaying Game. The adventure takes place in Brinestump Marsh and the surrounding areas of Varisia in the Pathfinder campaign setting, and serves as a prequel to We Be Goblins! We Be Goblins Too!, and We Be Goblins Free!, Paizo's popular 2011, 2013, and 2015 Free RPG Day adventures!

Civil War

Jack, Brian, & I went and saw the opening of Civil War at the Spectrum...we had a great deal of fun taunting the Team Cap fans and taking our pictures with the standees...

Jack nailed it--my hatred of Scarlet Witch & love of Hawkeye's bow is captured well in this photo.

Brain also nailed it--flipping off the Juicers while joining Team IM with fire and vigor.

We picked up the collectable cup & metal popcorn container.

We played Magic in the VIP section.

It was a really fun time--felt like a return to a great time that Brian & Jack used to have...

International TableTopDay 2016 Recap

International Table Top Day 2016 was not the huge hit that previous years had been--Team Schwarm had trouble finding shops that were actually particiapating this year--things just did not seem to be as organizied and it was not clear how to make chartible donations--rather then a celebration of table top, this year felt more like a promotion of Geek & Sundry which is not a bad thing at all, I really like the stuff that they do, but not what I was hoping for--I am looking for a global game day, which maybe is not the goal of TableTopDay?

In any event, we started with the game that started it all--Tsuro!

Cody like the Dragon's in Tsuro by the Sea and once again defeated me.

This lead directly into a game of Pillow War

which may not be a TableTop game, but is clearly one of the big games for us these days.

Next we played some X-Wing

We do not have enough ships OR enough understanding of the rules to really make this fun--we just fly around and blast each other--which is good, but not great.

After three table top games at home we went to Kingslayer Comics. KSC was doing more Magic-the Gathering Gameday stufff--scheduling TableTopDay and MtG Game days should be avoided in the future.

We started up a quick game of D&D

Continuing the game that Cody and Josh have been playing

I had a quick set up of the Kings Chamber, the Encounter with the Giant, the Kobold Betrayl, and the Princess Corruption--we got to the Giant before the kids got hungry and we left for food.

There were some fun Crits and some fun Fumbles

And we played with Travis, the shop owner's kid who was named Logan and really loved the Harry Potter pregen I had printed from Geek and Sundry Site.

After this we headed to Dice House Games!

Tuan was on Fire--the shop was packed--but they had no TableTopDay stuff--evidently ~800 shops signed up & only 50 got boxes of promo stuff.

Jack and I drafted Shadows over Innistrad--sight unseen!

We had never seen the cards at all-we listened to Judge's Corner and Wedge on the drive down to figure out what was up...

I played a blue white spirits deck which did not really work.

This was the only thing I won all night.

But it was great to be back at the best game shop in California playing Magic.

International Table Top Day 2016

This year for International Table Top Day, which may just be Tabletop Day, I plan to run some D&D for Cody and his seven year old friends in the morning.  In the afternoon play some Magic.

I am likely going to be doing all of this at Kingslayer Comics.

Khans of Tarkir Game Day @ Comic Quest

Jack & I headed to Comic Quest for Khans of Tarkir Game Day.

We were an hour late--event started at 11:00 AM & we thought it was at Noon--but they had started 30 minutes late so we were able to drop in fairly easily.

My first game was against Jack. He took the Bye and I took the lose.

His deck is very good--Jeskai with some wild Mantis Riders and other threats. I am playing Abzan Kind of Lame because I do not have all of the pieces to make it good.

My second match was against Stephen who is playing Minotaur's. I was confident and had fun playing him--I missed my green drops & got run over, but it was fun.

Round three I played against FNM Superstar Drew who was playing some odd Combo deck that never really went off--it was a very good time.

Dead in Thay--D&D Encounters S18 S13

We started the week at Chipotle. There is still talk of going to some 2 dollar sushi place in the mall, but it just never seems like we have enough time. Plus Chipotle is awesome--of course, I did not eat any since Lisa has me on a diet...Jack & DM Scott ruled it

Two full table again this week.

I was on the end, and though I had no chair, I still had plenty of space.

There was some interaction between the two tables as we entered the final stages of Dead in Thay--some crazy pyramid crypt thing.

I was lucky and rolled two crits with Spiritual Weapon.
