FNM @ Majestix

Jack & I went to the Costa Mesa Majestix CCG shop to play Friday Night Magic for the Theros Release.

This is the closest FNM shop to us, but traffic is still a bear to sit through to get to the shop--we were about 10 minutes late & the shop was packed. There was no parking so I parked at the super church next door after I drove over the Japanese restaurant's mop in the alley behind the shop! They wanted $50 for a new mop!

Majestix is an amazing comic / card shop -- the guys behind the counter are super friendly & knowledgeable. Extremely helpful. The other players, and there were a lot of them, were all there to have fun--they were friendly and nice & really made Jack and I feel welcome.

Great Shop!

One reason we wanted to go was to continue the Hero's Path game that started with the Thero's Prerelease.

To get the card
to go with the card we got on pre-release weekend. There was also this cool card protector page to keep all our Theros hero cards together.

this week you had to solve the puzzle in this image:

Jack and I stared at this for 20 minutes before someone told us the answer was Erbos--that the stars make an E and connect to display a 5/7, or semething--if this makes since to you PLEASE explain it to me--still very confused. I cannot see that at all & really have no idea what they were talking about.

Also, we got a Bident card for playing FNM.

Yep A BIDENT!

Majestic ran a sealed draft which was awesome. Jack was in a six player pod & I was in an 8 player pod [which means Jack had three rounds and I had 4 rounds--Jack and I left after ~ four hours at the start of round four].

The guys at my table were awesome--we had a lot of fun drafting these cards--I was mostly drafting for value since I still do not have a very good sense of what the cards do.

Jack went 2-1 for the night and one a pack. He crushed a kid round one that was not happy loosing to an eighth grader. At all. Then he lost to the guy who went 3-0. And then he beat a fairly good player who did not draw well.

I went 1-2-1 and won nothing. I lost the first round to much better player--I was crushed the first game & played a very close and fun game the second time. I went 2-0 against a control deck in the second round--Jason and I really had a good time--this was the most fun I had. The third match was against a Red Green deck that I just could not close against--he crushed me BIG at the end.

I learned the value of casting at the bestow cost.

I learned the value of moving slowly--I play very slow and do much better when moving slowly.

I had a really good time.

The shop is fantastic, the players are super friendly, and this was likely my best public play magic experience. Jack also liked it a lot, largely because he won and drafted some very good cards.

Dice House Magic Match

After D&D Encounters at Dice House, we have started playing Magic: The Gathering. This week Brian & I took on V2 & Snaggletooth in Two Headed Giant.

V2, who was playing Red Black and killing all my slivers as quickly as I could summon them, has the absolute best T-Shirts in nerddom & Snaggletooth, who had some Black Green deck, has the irony to make any game fun--plus they were playing some of the greatest decks I have seen. Oh, yeah--they are also home schooled Eighth Graders...

I was playing my Sliver deck & Brian was playing a Mono Black deck that sucked--he had just created it. Also, there was some humor in the fact that Brian, who has been playing for as long as I have, had all of these weird Standard Illegal Cards that he has no idea where he got. The best part was that V2 was also playing a bunch of banned cards--but V2 was playing cards banned because they were bombastically awesome. Brian just had old cards.

Snaggletooth was able to get some Theros monster up to 20/20 with trample using his Lillian Planeswalker [yeah, like I said his deck was rad & going off], V2 got stuff out but Doom Blade and other tricks kept him relatively in check. Brian was mana starved & all of my slivers were dead...it was ugly, but a lot of fun.

Crit Juice draws Frog with Demon Head

During last nights D&D Encounters, the Heroes broke into the morgue, stole a Bhaalspawn Demon's Head, tied it the back of a Giant Frog & escaped. The fine folks at Crit Juice have drawn it for us & captured the process on film.

So awesome!

Murder in Baldur’s Gate--D&D Encounters S15 S7

Another great week of D&D Encounters at Dice House in Fullerton.

This week DM Michael could not make it so DM Gerard had to deal with a combined table of 10 players. He did an amazing job of keeping the story going while setting up a player versus player type duel situation--there was still some great investigation and other role playing.

This is the best encounter season we have played since at Dark Sun--it is just face moving, funny, and almost identical to a 'real' home game type situation. I am really loving it & would love to tell WotC but with the current state of their forums I am afraid to try.

Snaggletooth was player of the week, with his constant refrain of "you suck"! I think he dead panned this to just about every single player at one point or another--just fantastic & funny...

The Opposite Fence was strong and having a blast--V2 spent his time firing Magic Missile at my PC, Doctor Druid, for no apparent reason--I responded by Storm Spiking the guard that had him restrained.

Very fun!

Other guy, bought a flying carpet! Really good stuff.

Brian was distracted and spent much of the week playing Thick as a Brick by Jethro Tull--which really is as good as you remember.

The table was very crowded, but DM Gerard was high energy and kept things moving quickly--a really awesome textbook job of improvisational DM'ing--this kid is very good.

I captured the entire event on video and got some great photos of some of the players dice--these red Baldur's Gate's D20's are really awesome.

Even with 10 players and a DM and a visitor at the table, I really felt like I had enough space.

I continue to take good notes on our sessions.

We did get Mini's and maps out for the dueling section of the Encounter. That is me, Doctor Druid, surrounded by Guard Tokens and some other PC's watching as a Halfling Firework Salesman kicks my ass.

It was another 'big map' encounter which I really do think work much better for encounters--players have more freedom, DM's have more room to adjust, and the fights just seem to flow more smoothly.

Here are my notes as I try sketching a Bhalspawn Skull tied with rope onto a giant frog. I am not the best artist, so I will contact the Crit Juice crew and see if I can get this commissioned.

and a second attempt.

but I was really going for something more spooky like this, but more cartoony & with old rope connecting the two.

A very fun week was had by all & I cannot wait for next week.
